Mavra Volia Beach

★★★★★4.8(312 reviews)

Mavra Volia (Μαύρα Βώλια, meaning "Black Pebbles") is one of the most unique beaches in all of Greece. Located near the ancient village of Emporios in southern Chios, the beach is covered in dark volcanic pebbles created by an ancient eruption of the nearby Psaropoula volcano thousands of years ago. The striking contrast between the jet-black stones and the luminous turquoise-blue water makes Mavra Volia a genuinely unforgettable spectacle. The water is exceptionally clear — you can see right to the bottom at considerable depth. There are actually two adjacent coves: the larger main beach and a smaller, quieter cove to the south reached by a short path. Both are sheltered by dramatic volcanic cliffs. The beach has basic facilities including a small snack bar and sun lounger rentals in summer (July–August). It can get busy at the height of summer, so arriving before 10am is recommended. The water is deeper and cooler than sandy beaches — perfect for snorkelling.

Local Tips

Come before 10am in July–August to get the best spot. Wear water shoes — the pebbles can be uncomfortable without them. The smaller second cove (accessed via a path from the main beach) is quieter and equally beautiful. No shade from trees — bring your own umbrella.

Absolutely unlike anything I have ever seen. The black volcanic stones and the turquoise sea make for an otherworldly contrast. Get there early in July — it fills up fast. The water is incredibly clear and cold even in August.

We almost skipped this because it sounded gimmicky. Do NOT skip it. The black pebble beach is spectacular. Bring water shoes and an umbrella. The smaller second cove accessed from the path is even more beautiful and less crowded.
