Glaroi takes its name from the Greek word for seagull — large colonies nest on the rocky headland that shelters the bay, and on calm mornings you will often hear them before you see the sea. The beach sits on the east coast of Chios, 9 km northeast of Chios Town between the villages of Vrontados and Sykiadas. It is a sandy bay with clear, slightly cool water — the lower temperature is caused by a freshwater spring that flows from the mountains and meets the sea here. In summer this is a genuine pleasure, making Glaroi one of the more refreshing swims on the island. Reaching Glaroi requires a car, scooter, or taxi — the road is paved and well-signed, but there is no public bus that runs directly to the beach. From Chios Town the drive takes around 15 minutes via the coastal road north. On the sand you will find a beach bar serving pizza, snacks, and cocktails — a good spot to settle in for the afternoon with sun loungers and umbrellas available to hire. This is not a traditional taverna stop; for a full Greek meal, plan to eat in Vrontados village before or after your swim. Glaroi is a popular choice with locals who want a beach north of town, and tends to be quieter than the beaches to the south — fewer tourists, more island families.
A car, scooter, or taxi is required — no direct public bus. Taxi from Chios Town: approximately €12–15. The water is cooler than south-coast beaches due to a freshwater spring, which is a bonus in mid-summer. For a full meal, eat in Vrontados (5 min drive) rather than the beach bar.
We come here most summer evenings — the water is noticeably cooler than the south beaches, which is perfect in August. The beach bar has good cocktails and pizza. Not a taverna but a great place to spend an afternoon. Need a car to get there.
Güzel kumsal, su temiz ve serin. Plaj barı pizza ve kokteyller sunuyor, geleneksel lokanta yok ama bar için ideal. Arabayla 15 dakika — taksiyle de gidilir. Vrontados'tan sonra solda.
