Apothika is two things in one: a perfectly good beach in its own right, and the location of the legendary Tortuga Beach Bar — one of the most celebrated sunset spots in the Aegean. The main beach at Apothika is a mix of pebbles and rocks, with deep, clear water and dramatic scenery. It has sun loungers for hire and a small cantina. But the Tortuga Bar, perched on the rocks above, is the real draw — cocktails, music, and one of the most photogenic sunset views in Chios, looking west across the open sea with nothing between you and the Turkish mainland silhouette on the horizon. The real secret, however, is the hidden cove accessible only by kayak or a short swim around the rocky headland to the south. This private beach — no name, no facilities, no crowds — is completely cut off from the road and only reachable from the water. The Tortuga Bar rents kayaks specifically for this purpose. Apothika is located in southern Chios, roughly between Pyrgi and Emporios. The road is decent but narrow in the final stretch. The combination of Apothika + Tortuga Bar + hidden cove kayak makes for one of the best full-day beach experiences on the island.
Local Tips
Time your visit for 2–3 hours before sunset to get a sun lounger at Tortuga before the crowd arrives. Rent a kayak early in the afternoon to explore the hidden cove before returning for the sunset. The kayak route around the headland takes about 5 minutes each way — suitable for beginners.

The Tortuga bar at sunset is genuinely one of the most beautiful things I have seen in Greece. Great cocktails, the view is perfect, and the music fits perfectly. We also kayaked to the hidden cove — totally deserted, crystal water. Do both.
